Two places in Sussex have been named among the most expensive for people living alone.

Research by UK Debt Collector has calculated which towns and cities have the biggest "singles tax" - a measure of "the extra costs single people face simply because there’s no one to split the bills with".

While not an official term, the singles tax is an informal name given to the premium people pay for products and services because of living alone and fronting all the costs solo.

It is the second year that UK Debt Collector has published a report into the extra costs of living alone.

The research found that two places in Sussex had an especially high singles tax.

According to the research, Crawley had the fifth highest singles tax of anywhere in the UK, with renters paying on average £12,455 more a year to live alone.

Brighton was not far behind, coming in ninth place overall, with renters who live alone paying an extra £11,848 a year.

"It refers to the extra costs single people face simply because there’s no one to split the bills with, from rent and council tax to everyday spending like food and broadband."

The findings reveal just how much more solo living can cost compared to households with two or more adults.

London tops the list for the highest singles tax among renters, with extra annual costs exceeding £20,000.

The researchers used financial data from a number of sources to find out how much extra single person households were paying on average compared to couples who cohabit.

The data in the study includes core expenses like rent, council tax (with a 25 per cent discount), utility bills and broadband.

It also includes lifestyle expenses such as owning a pet, attending a wedding, car insurance, streaming services, Christmas, takeaways and package holidays.
