The United States today suspended three bilateral agreements with China alleging continuous violation of human rights in Hong Kong. Earlier, on July 1, the China had imposed National Security Law in Hong Kong, according to which ‘secession, subversion, terrorism and foreign interference’ became liable to life imprisonment.
“The Chinese Communist Party has taken drastic steps to erode the high degree of autonomy that Beijing itself promised to the United Kingdom and the people of Hong Kong for 50 years under the UN-registered Sini-British joint Declaration,” US department of state statement .
The Department Spokesperson, Morga Ortagus said, “President Trump has made it clear that the United States, therefore, treat Hong Kong as ‘one country one system’ and take action against individuals who have crushed the freedoms of the people of Hong Kong.”
“The President’s Executive Order on Hong Kong Normalization (E.O. 13936) set forth a number of responses to Beijing’s actions, including suspending and eliminating preferential treatment for Hong Kong.
“As part of the ongoing implementation measures measures, we notified the Hong Kong authorities on August 19 of our suspension authorities on August 19 of our suspension or termination of three bilateral agreements. These agreements covered the surrender of fugitive offenders, the transfer of sentenced persons, and reciprocal tax exemptions on income derived from the international operation of ships,” Ortagus added.
The relation between the United States and China is not very cordial especially since the outbreak of CoronaVirus pandemic. The pandemic, which first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan, has spread worldwide with 22473889 infected people and 787731 deaths across the globe, at the time of writing this report. The US is presently the worst hit country with a total of 5686894 infections and 175881 deaths. The US has been blaming China for not sharing the sufficient information about the pandemic to the world.
