The United States President, Donald Trump, became the third prominent world leader after Britain’s Boris Johnson and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro to be tested COVID-19 positive. His wife Melania too has been diagnosed of the same disease. The disclosure in this regard came early on Friday morning just two days after his first TV debate with rival Democratic Party candidate, Joe Biden.
Trump was not wearing a mask, but instead ridiculed Biden for using it. This was not the first time that he had mocked people wearing mask. Trump’s illness is likely to affect the Republican Party campaign for the next month’s Presidential election, in which, according to various surveys, he is trailing behind.
If the sickness gets prolonged Vice President Mike Pence may have to officiate as President. Trump has repeatedly been accusing China for the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been calling it as ‘Wuhan Virus’ and ‘China Virus’. Critiques charged him with showing initial negligence in the fight against Corona Virus which has taken the lives of about 2,13,000 people in the United States.
Political pundits are of the view that the Republican Party rank and file expect that Trump’s illness may generate sympathy for him. But the Democrats are in no mood to relent from the ferocious election campaign though Biden has wished early recovery for Trump and his wife. World leaders are also sending messages and praying for early recovery of the US President and his spouse.
