In his first public campaigning for his former vice president, previous US President Barack Obama has hit out at President Donald Trump for a variety of reasons ranging from his response to racial unrest in the country to fighting the Corona Virus pandemic.
While exhorting the Democrat party’s support base consisting mainly of Blacks, Hispanics, Jews and Asians, Obama told them to exercise their franchise on Election Day which falls on the third of the next month. He said: “This election requires every single one of us to do our part. What we do these next 13 days will matter for decades to come.”
Obama was addressing a drive-in rally in Philadelphia, which falls in the swing state of Pennsylvania. The state is also the one which Biden has visited the most in this campaign season. It needs to be mentioned that a swing state is, in American politics, the term given to any state that could reasonably be won in a presidential election by either of the two parties by a swing in votes. In contrast, the states which regularly lean to a certain party are known as safe states.
During his speech, Obama specifically targeted voters who might be disillusioned by the ruling party, giving his full backing to both Biden and his Vice-Presidential nominee Kamala Harris. He further said, “I am so confident in Joe Biden and Kamala Harris surrounding themselves with people who are serious, who know what they’re doing, who are representative of all people — not just some people — and us being able to then dig ourselves out of this hole.”
Earlier Mr. Biden had in a speech talked of the Democrat party’s plans about dealing with Black rights and the Corona Virus pandemic. No wonder, the issue of racism is a major one in this year’s Presidential elections, especially in view of the killing of the hip-hop artist George Floyd earlier this year by an armed policeman.
