Four days after the Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers observed fast, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) went on a one-day fast on Friday, in solidarity with the agitating farmers of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, DMK President MK Stalin said that his party strongly condemns the BJP’s allegation that the protesting farmers are anti-national.
Addressing a gathering, he said that the farmers are protesting continuously against the three farm laws passed by the Centre for the past 23 days and that his party has decided to support the farmers. He added that, as a part of it, he and his party members will be observing fast on Friday.
Stalin further said that the Central government is not thinking about the farmers and the common masses. He alleged that the BJP and AIADMK are working against the interests of the people of the country and the state and are passing laws against them.
He also alleged that the BJP government doesn’t care for the people and only support and encourage corporates and give subsidies, meant for the common masses, to them.
Earlier on December 8, the DMK too had taken part in the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called for by the agitating farmers against the three farm laws, citing that their demand for the repealing of the three legislations was “totally justified”.
In addition, the DMK had also appealed to traders’ bodies, government employees’ associations, labour unions and others in Tamil Nadu to extend support to the bandh.
It needs to be mentioned that the DMK has stepped up its activities as elections are due in April next year in the state.
Last year, in the Lok Sabha poll, the AIADMK and BJP could win only one seat in the state and the DMK-Congress-Left combine took the rest 38. This was in spite of the much better performance of the BJP-led NDA in other states.
