Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa on Friday (April 16) tested corona positive on the day the state reported 14,800 cases of COVID-19.
This is the second time that Yediyurappa has tested positive.
Before his report confirming corona positive came, the chief minister held a hurriedly called meeting on how to tackle the pandemic at his residence in the morning.
Though no lockdown has been announced in Karnataka, Bangalore has become the third city in India so far as the number of corona virus cases is concerned.
However, night curfew will continue in Bangalore and seven other cities of Karnataka till April 20. The date may further be extended as the number of cases is increasing.
Yediyurappa tweeted that he is getting hospitalised following the advice of doctors after he felt mild symptom of corona. The first time the 78-year old chief minister tested positive was in August 2020.
Thus, he is the second chief minister in the recent days to test positive. UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath is too suffering from the disease. Uttar Pradesh has witnessed sudden surge in the number of cases with Lucknow being hit the hardest.
Reports said that a large number of devotees returning from Haridwar in neighbouring Uttarakhand are responsible for the sudden increase in the number of cases.
One of those who lost the lives is Mahamandaleshwar Kapil Dev Das, 65, head of an Akhada from Madhya Pradesh. He breathed his last on Thursday. He was admitted to a hospital in Haridwar after showing signs of COVID-19.
According to chief medical officer of Haridwar, Dr. S K Jha, 24 sants and sadhus tested positive on Friday itself.
