The Indian Medical Association has raised strong objection over allegations by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev that allopathic doctors are responsible for the death of lakhs of corona virus patients in the last few months.
Ramdev, while speaking at a private function, had said that the pandemic had exposed the failure of the allopathic mode of treatment in bringing down fever and treating COVID-19 patients. He said that more people died because of the medicine and oxygen prescribed by the doctors than the actual COVID-19.
The IMA called on the Union health minister, Dr Harshvardhan, himself an allopathic doctor, that the Baba be prosecuted under the Epidemic Diseases Act 1897 or accept his accusations and dissolve the modern medical facilities.
The IMA alleged that Ramdev is “repeatedly taking advantage of the situation and creating fear among the public to sell his illegal drugs”.
The IMA also said that Ramdev had called modern medical doctors “murderers” in the presence of the health minister while releasing his medicine.
The largest body of allopathic medicine claimed that Ramdev and his associate Balkrishna have been taking modern medical allopathic treatment as and when they contract illness.
The stand taken by the IMA had put the Union government in a tight spot as many top BJP leaders, including the health minister himself, had been attending functions organised by Ramdev and even championing the effectiveness of medicine produced by his firm, Patanjali. The most prominent is Coronil, the medicine about which the World Health Organisation had in February last clarified that it has not certified this drug for Corona Virus treatment.
On the other hand, Patanjali had claimed that Coronil had received certification from Ayush ministry as per the World Health Organisation’s certification scheme.
