West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday started her election campaign in Uttar Pradesh and announced that TMC will not field its candidate and that her party will back Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav in upcoming election. She vowed to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In a joint press conference with Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow, she requested to vote for SP.
She said that it is a one on one fight between BJP and SP in UP as it was between BJP and TMC in Uttar Pradesh.
“You must unite to ensure victory for Akhilesh Yadav, I am not fighting in UP. Today the fight is big, we need to save the country for which we must support Akhilesh,” Mamata said. She appealed that don’t waste your vote by casting it in favor of BJP.
Mamata said that if she and Akhilesh had jointly conducted a rally crores of people would have arrived. But we will follow the guidelines of the election commission. She thanked Akhilesh Yadav for supporting her in the Bengal election campaign.
Mamata reached Lucknow on Monday. On her arrival in UP, BJP targeted her for allegedly insulting people of Uttar Pradesh during West Bengal election campaign.
