President elect Droupadi Murmu took oath as 15th president of India at the Parliament Hall on Monday. Chief justice of India N V Raman administered the oath to Murmu in the presence of outgoing president Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar among others.
In her first address as president, Murmu recalled her challenging journey from being an ordinary girl of a humble background to becoming the president of India. “I belong to a tribal society. I have got the opportunity to rise from serving as a ward councilor to becoming the President of India. This is greatness of India, the mother of democracy. It is a tribute to the power of democracy that a daughter born in a poor house in a remote tribal area can reach the highest constitutional position in India” Droupadi Murmu said.
She stressed that if she can reach to this pinnacle, the poor of India can also dream anything and fulfill them.
Murmu reminded that she was the first president who was born in Independent India while stating that it is an honour to be elected at a time when India is celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. “It is also a coincidence that my political career started when the country was celebrating its 50th year of Independence,” she mentioned.
President Droupadi Murmu urged people of India,” Let us unite and move forward on the path of duty with a dedicated spirit to build a glorious and self-reliant India.
