The Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday arrested Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Delhi, Somnath Bharti in Rae Bareli after a spat with the police.
The incident took place when Bharti was about to pay a visit to a government school which was in a very bad condition. Someone threw ink on him in front of the police and fled away.
The infuriated MLA lost temper and started abusing Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. He blamed the UP chief minister for this incident and was heard in camera holding the policemen responsible for the attack.
Later, the police arrested him on the charge of his statement given in neighbouring Amethi a couple of days back.
The AAP leaders have undertaken a campaign to visit those government schools in Uttar Pradesh whose condition is very bad. When he was about to leave the guest house to visit a school in the vicinity, he was stopped from doing so by the police.
The police told the AAP MLA that he won’t be allowed to visit the school as the Amethi police wanted to question him for an alleged remark made by him there. It was in the melee that someone threw ink on him and left the place.
Later Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in a tweet asked his UP counterpart to improve the condition of schools rather than arresting the visiting AAP leaders. He asked Yogi to learn from Manish Sisodia (the education minister of Delhi) the art of improving the condition of schools.
On the other hand, Bharti charged that the cases were fabricated against him. He also raised the issue of deplorable condition of government hospitals in Amethi.
With election in UP due in February 2022 the AAP is trying to make inroads into the state. Several other leaders have visited the state in the past few days.
