The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday interrogated Menaka Gambhir, sister-in-law of Abhishek Banerjee, in the multi-crore coal smuggling and money laundry scam. Menaka is the sister of Abhishek’s wife, Rujira Narula Banerjee.
According to reports, a team comprising five officials quizzed Menaka for about three hours in Kolkata on Monday afternoon a day after another team of investigating agency went to the residence of her sister in South Kolkata’s Kalighat area on Sunday. As Rujira was not in her house the team returned after serving summon notice to her.
Rujira, in her reply to the investigating agency, said that she would be available any time between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Tuesday.
However, she had expressed surprise as to why the CBI was trying to quiz her and her sister Menaka even when their names do not figure in the FIR. Her husband Abhishek, who is the nephew of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, once again accused the BJP of using CBI, ED etc. for political ends.
Incidentally, this development took place on the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a public meeting in Hooghly in which he claimed that Bengal is heading towards ‘Poriborton’ (change). He accused the Mamata Banerjee government of not spending the money sent by the Centre to West Bengal.
It needs to be mentioned that only on February 7 last, Prime Minister Modi visited Hooghly to inaugurate gas projects and had addressed a public meeting. Earlier on February 22 he inaugurated several projects in Assam too.
