As Congress called for a nation wide protest against inflation, unemployment and GST on food items on Friday, party leaders across the country hit the road in large numbers. Several top leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Shahi Tharoor and others were detained in the capital and 144 were imposed across New Delhi except Jantar Mantar.
Earlier Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary and other senior party leaders joined the “In Black” protest outside parliament against inflation, unemployment and GST on food items. Congress leaders wore black clothes to mark the protest.
Rahul Gandhi addressing the media mounted a blistering attack against the Central as he said that India is witnessing the death of democracy. Comparing the present regime with Hitler’s dictatorship, he said, “Hitler too used to win the elections as he controlled all institutions”.
The Congress leader said, “Today, there is a dictatorship of 4 people in India. We want to raise the issue of inflation, unemployment etc. We want to discuss the society being divided.”
Meanwhile BJP hit back at Rahul Gandhi by accusing him of demeaning Indian democracy. Union Home Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the comment by Rahul Gandhi is ‘shameful and irresponsible’ as he said that democratic rights were suspended during the emergency when Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother was prime minister.
