Three days after Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha secretary of West Bengal, Pamela Goswami, accused her fellow party leader, Rakesh Singh of hatching a conspiracy against her, the police on Tuesday night arrested the latter from East Bardhaman district in the cocaine smuggling case. Earlier, his two sons were also arrested from their home in Kidderpore in Kolkata while they were preventing the entry of police.
According to reports quoting police sources Rakesh was fleeing in his car when he was intercepted and arrested. Actually, he was asked to appear in Kolkata Police Headquarters at 4 PM for interrogation in the cocaine smuggling case. He replied to the police that he was on way to Delhi and his lawyers could meet with the police. The police went to his home when he didn’t turn up. There the police faced resistance from his family members. It was then that the two sons were arrested.
Rakesh is reportedly close to the West Bengal in-charge of the BJP, Kailash Vijayvargiya.
Rakesh was accused by none other but his own party leader Pamela Goswami while she was about to be produced in the Alipore Court on February 20. She repeatedly screamed before media-persons that Rakesh Singh had plotted a conspiracy against her. She demanded his arrest and a CID probe into the matter.
Pamela, along with another party-man, Prabir Kumar Dey, was arrested a day earlier and about 100 gm cocaine was recovered from her purse and car while she was parking her vehicle at her residence in New Alipore.
Pamela’s allegation against her own party-man landed the saffron party in a tight spot. The arrest of Rakesh came just a few hours after the Central Bureau of Investigation completed one-and-a-half hour long interrogation of Rujira Banerjee, the wife of Abhishek Banerjee. The latter is the nephew of chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
