The Delhi Police on Sunday (May 23) arrested two-time Olympic medalist wrestler, Sushil Kumar, and produced him before the Rohini Court. The Court reserved its judgment on Delhi Police’s plea seeking 12 days of custodial remand for the accused.
Sushil and his associate, Ajay Kumar, a physical education teacher, have been accused of killing 23-year old wrestler, Sagar Dhankhar, after a dispute over non-payment of rent. Ajay too was produced before the court.
Sushil’s wife is the landlady of the house, which Dhankhar had vacated without paying rent of two months.
The incident took place a fortnight ago and Sushil has been absconding since then. Dhankhar died of concussion on May 5, a day after the quarrel. Two others, Amit and Sonu, received injuries. Sagar Dhankhar was the former junior national wrestling champion.
Sushil was arrested by Special Cell of the Southern Range of the Delhi Police from Mundka. The Delhi Police had announced an award of Rs.1 lakh and Rs 50,000 for the arrest of Sushil and Ajay respectively. They have been evading arrest since May 5 after an FIR was lodged against them under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 365 (abduction) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) at Model Town Police Station.
Sushil’s anticipatory bail was rejected by the court on May 18 as the allegation against him was too serious.
It needs to be mentioned that Sushil won a bronze medal for wrestling in the Beijing Olympics of 2008 and a silver medal in the London Olympics of 2012. He hails from Najafgarh in Delhi. He is a winner of Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Shri.
