While in West Bengal the BJP manifesto released on March 21 promised implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) immediately after coming to power, in Assam it remained silent on this issue.
However, the Sankalp Patra, as it is named, called for rectifying the irregularities in the National Register of Citizens. Like in West Bengal’s party manifesto, it called for the strengthening of the international border and expulsion of all the infiltrators.
The manifesto was released by the party’s national president, J P Nadda, in Guwahati on March 23 (Tuesday). Present on the occasion were the state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Assam unit president of the BJP, Ranjeet Kumar Das.
It mentioned “correction and reconciliation of entries under SC-mandated NRC” and also promised laws against ‘love jihad’ and ‘land jihad’. The manifesto also assured to defend the cultural and linguistic diversity of Assam.
Contrary to this, the Congress party manifesto released in Guwahati on March 20 by party leader Rahul Gandhi promised that CAA would never be implemented in the state.
Besides, it guaranteed five lakh jobs, free electricity up to 200 units, payment of Rs 2,000 to all the housewives and hike in daily wage of tea-garden workers up to Rs 365.
