A large number of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and supporters, mostly women, indulged in the ransacking of the outer premises of the official residence of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal late on Sunday a few hours after he announced that he would be observing a day long fast on Monday as a mark of solidarity towards the agitating farmers.
Among other things, the protestors broke the CCTV cameras installed outside the CM’s house.
Kejriwal also asked the Aam Aadmi Party workers and people of the country who fully sympathize with the farmers’ cause to observe fast.
Kejriwal’s announcement and appeal to the people angered the saffron party workers who have regularly been protesting and sitting on dharna ever since the Delhi chief minister went to the Singhu border a couple of days back to express his support towards the farmers. The Delhi Police on that day even targeted an AAP MLA.
Kejriwal had then alleged that he was virtually put under house arrest and that the police were doing nothing to remove the BJP workers picketing outside.
In a related incident on Sunday the Delhi Police took nine people into custody and then released them later in the day. The nine persons include AAP MLAs Raghav Chadha and Aatishi. They were arrested when they sought permission from the police to stage demonstration outside the house of Union home minister Amit Shah.
Actually, they wanted to highlight the Rs 2,500 crore scam in the Delhi Municipal Corporation which is controlled by the BJP.
The Delhi BJP appears to be upset over the way the chief minister disclosed as to how the Centre wanted to acquire nine stadiums to convert them into open jails for the agitating farmers but his government refused to oblige. On the other hand, the BJP accused Arvind Kejriwal of politicizing the farmers’ agitation for his own ends.
Meanwhile, the protesting farmers observed a day long fast and held sit-ins across the country.
