The Osun State Government has emphasised the importance of patience and continued dialogue in addressing the ongoing boundary dispute with neighboring Oyo State.
This message was delivered during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to the Governor’s Office at the Osun State Secretariat, Abeere, on Monday.
Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who represented Governor Ademola Adeleke, stressed that peaceful engagement and cooperation between the two states remain the best path toward resolving the lingering issues.
He stated, “I believe the solution is within; it is political. Nobody knows when the land was created, but now we are fighting over it. At the end of the day, it’s a round table solution.”
Adewusi revealed that both Governors—Ademola Adeleke of Osun and Seyi Makinde of Oyohad directed their deputies to jointly visit the disputed areas to assess the situation firsthand and promote calm.
He noted that local leaders are often wrongly blamed during times of crisis, hence the need for careful handling.
NBC Director-General, Surveyor Adamu Adaji, commended the Osun State Government’s proactive approach and called for enlightenment and sensitization of residents on the importance of land boundaries.
“Our aim is to advise and appeal to the two states and the inhabitants to kindly cooperate with each other,” he said.
The NBC’s visit comes in the wake of violent clashes between residents of Lagelu (Oyo) and Iwo (Osun), which led to casualties, including the death of an Osun Amotekun Corps member.
Efforts are ongoing to review documents, consult local authorities, and de-escalate tensions ahead of a final boundary resolution report.
